Aspiring journalists should stop going to journalism programs and go to some other kind of grad school. If I was studying today, I would go get a master’s in statistics, and maybe do a bunch of accounting courses and then write from that perspective. I think that’s the way to survive. The role of the generalist is diminishing. Journalism has to get smarter.
Even though I had a wonderful time getting my MA in journalism, I have to agree with this. I found that the true education came via the people I met, be them professors or friends or colleagues, and the conversations we had outside of the classroom. That was the value of grad school for me.
I should have studied economics. Or business. Or biology.
Never too late.
